ACK. This feature was so ridiculous. I download music in bulk that I've never heard of, dump it into iTunes and then listen to the songs one by one and rate which ones I like the best. Then I use the Top Rated playlist to listen to them. I can't stand this because now I've got to go through like 5,000 songs and unrate all the ghosts.

Silverbean: Glad this could help you. I am wondering why you don't just sort using genre, though. Or grouping. Seems to me you get all your hip-hop on, let's say, 4 stars. Then you just select all the 4 star tracks and change the genre to Hip-Hop. It is an interesting notion, though: GMusic. Hell, I'd probably use it. Thanks for the comment.

oooops i mean check album rating to turn it on …. just wanted to make sure there was a dummy proof version out …. also while on the subject more stars would be nice cause im having to mix classic rock and punk and new rock and all that in just one star category…. MORE STARS PLEASE ITUNES …. or google make something better than itunes

Thanks a ton for this, I use stars to keep hip hop, to classical sorted… (example; 3star=rock 4star=hip hop) and blah blah blah …. i used the original way by making sure i was in list view and went ahead and found those stupid hallow stars… right click where it says album or artist or anywhere on that bar …. click album rating and you see a whole bunch more hallow stars on some things and then the filled in ones where you dont want them …. make that to none and poof gone ….. that way i can use the 1 star spot for classical, so thanks again

Thank you, very much. I use the "Top Rated" smart playlist as the music I put on my iPhone…There was 2 GIGS of auto-rated songs on my iPhone, just eating up space.

I've found by simply turning on the "Album Rating" view option, the auto-rated songs were removed from my "Top Rated Songs" playlist.

Chris: You can indeed do that via the Album Art version, but I have been able to get it down to none, so not sure why it wasn't working for you…thanks for the comment, though!

I just found the solution! Go to you music library. Then Go to the View menu, and select "as grid" at the top. All of your music will be albums. Then you select all with ctrl-a, and right click on the songs. Go to "Album Rating" and select 1 star. For some reason, Going to "none" doesn't work. All you albums will no longer have high auto ratings that f' with your regular song ratings. AKA no hollow star ratings.

I guess this only works if you dont care about what your albums are rated.

I've been developing a script that will determine a song's rating based on its play and skip counts. It uses the proper math to account for the uncertainty stemming from limited amounts of data and has a few other features. I just blogged about it yesterday.

Geez!!! Why the hell would I want my computer to average out my tastes? I do not want this and why can I not turn this hollow star thing off? Also, why did ITunes remove the shuffle setting for more likely/less likely play songs from the same artist? It was very useful! I used it! Completely inane.

I wonder if Apple will ever implement self-educative rating system based on skip/play counts and related sonds ratings. It's make better to genius playlist, which I like much.
