It was <i>very</i> close to actually happening after Burton died in the bus crash. Claypool auditioned for Metallica, made it to the final cuts, and got passed over for Newstead. Hell, Claypool almost joined Exodus as well. Of course, I'm kind of thankful he was left to his own devices to give us Primus, but still. That's the beauty of the Claypool thing, to me.
