Vatican Rep Admits God to Blame for World War II Atrocities

How else do you explain this?

I mean, think about it. If God is God, then by definition he is omnipotent. So the whole thing about long distance exorcisms not working is the biggest crock I've ever heard. If God wanted the devil out of Hitler and Stalin, then the devil would have been sent packing. Such is the definition of the word "omnipotent."

So if God is God, and is by definition omnipotent, which is what the Christian mythos teaches, then God allowed the devil to possess Hitler and Stalin and allowed World War II to happen in the manner it did.

And if God is God, then that means God is a right bastard, don't you think?

Of course, the alternate theory is that Father Amorth is just making shit up and there's actually no God. Occam's razor, and all that.

Please note: if you try to comment on this and fail, it's not because I'm just taunting you and not letting you respond. The taunting part is what's incorrect. We're in lockdown mode after all the spam shit. Eventually I'll open up comments all over the One Tusk sites again but right now my blood pressure just can't handle it. Sorry.

The spammers must be possessed by the devil. That's the ticket.

Comment Spam, Shutting Down Comments, and All the Gory Details

Okay, as promised, I'm giving you the gory details on my battle with comment spam on Needcoffee. I wouldn't exactly call what has happened a surrender–I have had to close down all comments on Needcoffee just to keep the server from crashing–I prefer to think of it as a scorched earth policy.

Basically, here's what's been happening. And here's why nothing I tried has worked.

There's a file in Wordpress that is pinged/called up when you want to post a comment. It's called wp-comments-post.php by default. What the spammers have been doing is hitting that file in order to post their spam on my site.

Do they succeed? No, not in the least. For the first part, I have…well, had…all comments moderated. Nothing was ever posted to Needcoffee as a comment without going through me, unless you were a member of the staff and logged into the site.

Why do they want to post spam? People ask me this all the time. Basically, there are lots of blogs that have no protection up whatsoever. As a result, these spam bits have links to the spam sites. Sites get Page Rank from Google depending on how many sites link to them, propping up their Page Rank score. That's a simple way of putting it, but that's the gist. So they hammer you with spam in the hopes of improving their standing in Google search findings.

Now. This wouldn't succeed even if they did manage to post something, since a rel="nofollow" tag will negate Page Rank boostage from happening. But these spammers and their spammer zombie whateverbots don't care. They will persist regardless of whether or not any comments actually succeed in getting posted. Why? Because they can, that's why.

The first thing people say is Akismet. Use Akismet. Well, Akismet is bogus for two reasons. First, just because the comment gets auto-moderated and left off the roll call, that doesn't mean it hasn't taken up space in your Wordpress database. I found this out the hard way after the first 21,000 spam comments rolled through, got caught, and now I have to clean out my database because they're taking up gobs of space. Second, just because the comment gets auto-moderated and left off the roll call, that doesn't mean the spambot hasn't hit your wp-comments-post.php file anyway. It has. And when you've got them coming in like a spam tsunami, sure Akismet keeps them from being posted or even from you having to moderate, but your site will 503 nonetheless.

The second thing people say is Bad Behavior. Use Bad Behavior. Bad Behavior helps, but it can be overwhelmed. I can't tell you how BB works, but I literally saw dozens and dozens of bot smacks against wp-comments-post.php a minute coming in. If this is BB when it's on full on strict mode, then without it, gah. So BB doesn't help.

Then, I renamed and eventually deleted wp-comments-post.php. Fuck it, says I, if you can't get to the file at all, you can't mess with me, right? Wrong! They're trying to hit the file, there or not, which means the server takes a hit, which means…503.

Then, I had DreamHost alter my htaccess file to block hits to the wp-comments-post.php file unless the referrer site is needcoffee. So you can't hit the site from anywhere else. Should help, right? Wrong! They can spoof shit so it looks like it's coming from my site.

So I started going in and trying to add bits to the htaccess file to weed out casino and poker spams along with certain IP addresses. The spam detail file I pulled down from BB was so large, I couldn't even process it. I finally deleted everything but the last seven hours, and even that was about 10,000 lines in the CSV file I used to pull it down so I could try and manipulate it.

Nothing worked. 503 errors on IE constantly, although strangely Firefox was slow but it could get through. No telling.

So finally, boom. Comments go bye-bye. Now at least you can get to the site. If anybody has any ideas on how to effectively stop not comment spam, but the server strain of the spam equivalent of a DDOS attack, let me know. Otherwise, I'm spent. Night.

MySpace Continues to Underwhelm

As I mentioned previously, MySpace hasn't exactly knocked my socks off.

So I received this evening, apparently out of the blue, the following e-mail:

Hello,

That issue is currently being resolved. Please be patient.

Thank you,
MySpace.com

Um…huh? There's no reference to any e-mail I might have sent. So I don't know what issue they're referring to. And don't you like that tone? "Please be patient." Like I'm a recalcitrant ass in line at the grocery store, bitching that the person in front of me is taking forever to write a check or something. Ugh.

The Blasphemy Challenge

Hilarious. While part of me agrees that it's kind of foolish to deny something that doesn't exist, the other part of me agrees that it's a great idea and please continue.

Now We See Why Uncle Warren Turned Off Commenting

A battalion of right bastards has spent the last few days hammering Needcoffee with all manner of comment spam. And I mean hammering. Hammering as in that's why you may have run into problems getting to the freaking site.

Dreamhost–because they rock and we like them–smacked the IPs of the perps so they can't get to us. However I fear that may be temporary. If comments disappear on Needcoffee for a while, you'll know why: did some research to try and find a plug-in that would ward off some of this bullshit but half of them don't work and the other half are worse than that. And Akismet only snags the spam after it's already used your server resources. So fun.

Welcome to the New Site.

Yes, I've moved my personal blog off of One Tusk and onto WidgettWalls.com. That way I can keep my personal shite out of One Tusk's way, since its site needs to do its own thing. And more of that will be coming soon, I hope. We have our plans and they will develop as they unfold.

I'm going to be plugging the books more, mostly because I'm just too old and bitter to give two shits any longer about what people think about me whoring for books. After all they're my books, and no one else in the world gives even a single shit about whoring for them in my stead. So be it. Prepare for whoredom.

To make myself feel better about not being a worthless unproductive idiot, I have adopted the use of the Workblog, which I first saw on Uncle Warren's site. I think it's a damn good notion. That way, there's no cluttering up the blog with just quick little "I did this" tidbits. And I need to do more of those. It's all about time slicing.

While I'm at this, I should go ahead and announce that the next book I'm aiming to get in print is something I've probably mentioned before: it reprints Love Letters, it reprints Sunday Before You and will contain a third chapbook-sized entry of miscellania that didn't fit either place. The third section is entitled What I Did On My Summer Vacation and will contain new poetry as well. The entire volume is called No One Wants to Grow Fur Anymore. And then maybe I'll be able to close the door on that chapter of things.

Then it will be trying to get the third season of Something Else completed, and then I will publish the first three seasons as a book as well.

Then there's the fact I can't get the comics out of my head. And considering I'm not really–not really–getting paid well for anything, fuck it. I should be able to write whatever the hell I want. So you just might see two more comics join Next Wave. I've just about got everything the way I need it setup in order to be able to timeslice more writing in. So I appreciate your patience.

I've got a shitload of cleaning up to do post-move. So things will look wonky and unattractive for a while. Bear with us.

Widge and an ex-duck

This is me.

No, really.

I am a writer, poet, spoken word performer, actor, singer, improviser, content creation and idea machine, freelance iconoclast, and the internet's janitor that dispenses pop culture wisdom to the protagonist of your choice. I have seen too many movies, read too many comic books, and when the zombies finally come, I'm the one you want to call. I sure as hell won't answer the phone, but it's the thought that counts. I advise people on the net, websites and technology, because I know these things instead of having a life or sleeping.

If you like something I've done, donate to the Widge Wants to Kill His Day Job Fund. Or if you'd like to hire me for a job, my rates are terribly reasonable. We thank you.
