This is me.
No, really.
I am a writer, poet, spoken word performer, actor, singer, improviser, content creation and idea machine, freelance iconoclast, and the internet's janitor that dispenses pop culture wisdom to the protagonist of your choice. I have seen too many movies, read too many comic books, and when the zombies finally come, I'm the one you want to call. I sure as hell won't answer the phone, but it's the thought that counts. I advise people on the net, websites and technology, because I know these things instead of having a life or sleeping.

Well, I liked how they explained why the prayers likely wouldn't work anyway. I suspect though that prayer is also about the power of positive thinking.
Jones: Yes, I think there is something to be said for positive thinking–while I don't necessarily buy into it having any special "power" I am willing to buy that our brains can control our bodies a lot more than we can normally tap into. As for the effectiveness of prayer, I would recommend checking out also Richard Dawkins' "The Root of All Evil," specifically the bit where he goes to Lourdes and quizzes the guy on how many miracles they've seen since the place was established. I posted the two halves of that special here.
