Cell Phones and Schools

Parents of New York, I agree with you. I think this is an extremely important issue.

After all, as long as your kids are getting a crummy public education, they might as well be able to call you and tell you about it during the course of the day.

  1. Funny. I always thought NYPD had better things to do than search school lockers for cell phones.

Of course, I also thought kids age 14 should not have cell phones.

  2. Shelly: Agreed on both counts. However, I dunno–if I had a 14-year-old who was going to be out of my sight for hours of the day, I'm paranoid and neurotic, they would have a cell phone. Granted, if they ever used the cell phone for any calls that were not "cleared" (i.e. you can read the freaking bill and see what time of the day they happened) they'd be in serious shit. But, what do I know? I'm a hardass who knows how to parent and tell a kid no.

  3. I suppose having my mother work at a school at that age so she was free when I was made things different. But too many parents don't say no. They say "no phone unless you do your homework" or "don't go over your minutes" but unless there's an enforced penalty, they might as well not bother.

My own sister is 14 now and she does have a cell phone. But she also has bad grades and a habit of going over her minutes. It just seems like Tae Kwon Do might be a more sound investment for someone worried about their kid.

Or maybe I just like being contrary.

Don't ask.

This is my latest book. Short stories written especially for you, or at least someone who reminded me a lot of you at the time.

Read it for free here. Or if you like paper, buy it here.

Then tell all your friends about it. Or all your enemies. I'm not particular either way.
